This blog started as a record of the restoration of Stevens Mill (the Grade II* Listed windmill on the museum site) but now includes the whole museum as well as the mill.

(Can you guess what the raffle prizes will be?)

Our opening days and hours are Thursdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays 11am – 5pm, last entrance is at 4pm.

We do recommend Season Tickets are purchased as they are such good value for our visitors.

A Season Ticket gives free entry to the Museum and Windmill throughout the entire season to visit the museum, the mill and all our on site events and talks too. We have a choice of Season Tickets; an individual season ticket is £15, a Joint season ticket is £20 (two adults at the same address) and a family season ticket is £25 (two adults and up to three children at the same address ). Please purchase these from our Kiosk at the entrance to the Museum using cash or card from our opening day.

Our Season Tickets provide vital support to help to keep the museum open for all to enjoy and ensures we can protect and preserve local artefacts and showcase the history of Burwell and surrounding areas for years to come across the generations.

If you would like to play a part, even for just a couple of hours a week, then we are looking for front of house volunteers to work across the season and help with our event programme too. If you love talking to people, have a love for and interest in the local area, and if you would like the opportunity to bring our history to life through storytelling and sharing fascinating facts, then please do contact us via museum@burwellmuseum.org.uk, social media or our website contact form. weeks as we prepare to welcome visitors back for the new season – of course
nothing is ever certain, but we hope to be able to offer our full range of
activities and events this year. We are still working on our events programme
as we welcome the wonderful Sarah James as our new administrator. However, we
expect that the start of the year will include:

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri;">Easter Egg hunt Sunday 17 and Monday 18 April

of April, back to our old opening hours of 11am to 5pm (last entry 4pm). Will
you be able to find all the Easter eggs? And can you spot the differences in
our displays after a busy winter for our volunteers?

We've really enjoyed welcoming Burwell Rainbows, Brownies and Guides to test drive our spooky activities and now we're ready to welcome visitors on Thursday 28th and Sunday 31st. We'd like to thank everyone who has supported us over the last two years as we hope for a better time next year!

Burwell Museumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03760034796105734892noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5963841707937479710.post-19681416509558961242021-09-16T16:15:00.000+01:002021-09-16T16:15:00.298+01:00Come and see us for Heritage Open Days!

Burwell Museumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03760034796105734892noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5963841707937479710.post-30646396104867107892021-08-05T15:54:00.001+01:002021-08-05T15:54:16.874+01:00Arty afternoons at Burwell Museum
It's really nice to see visitors out and about and enjoying the museum again - it's much nicer to sit and do admin when there are children learning to hula hoop outside the family room! We had a really good day at the summer fete, thanks to the musicians and our wonderful volunteers, and now we are getting stuck into "arty afternoons" with our summer holiday activities from 1.30-3.30 every Thursday in August. Today we've been making faces to decorate the bus windows, then later in the summer we'll be making our own stocks, making rubbings of different materials at the museum and creating amazing models out of recycled materials.

The mill team are also planning a bit of decorating, with plans to refresh the tar on the outside of the mill over the two weeks between the 10th and 22nd of August. This is a messy job and we're very grateful to the team for all of their hard work. It will mean that we can't welcome visitors to the mill during that time as the tar is very difficult to get off if you accidentally brush against it! We're always looking for new members of the mill team, so if you know anyone who is free on a Tuesday and would like to learn some new skills and learn more about historic milling, please let them know about us.

We hope everyone has a great summer!

Burwell Museumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03760034796105734892noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5963841707937479710.post-10315954509770536622021-07-08T13:43:00.002+01:002021-07-08T13:43:40.662+01:00Progress and plans for the rest of 2021

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Calibri",sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri;">Thank you very much to everyone who has supported us this year either by
volunteering or by coming to the museum on an open day or event day. Our
volunteers have been particularly busy and you may have noticed that the

for their extra days of work and to the site team for getting everything ready
for the arrival of the cherry picker.

As I write, museums are not allowed to open to the public until the 17th of May at the earliest, making our first day Thursday 20th May and our opening event Sunday 23rd May. Of course, that depends on everything going smoothly with the “road map” out of lockdown, so please keep an eye out online and for posters around the village to find out what we’re up to. We’d love to welcome you back but we want to make sure that it’s safe to do so.

While we’re closed to the public, our wonderful volunteers have been busy over the last few months and we’re making some improvements to our site. The biggest change will be a new path up the side of the mill and a more accessible entrance to the mill itself - the photo shows the work in progress. We’re very grateful to Martin Mead and his team for the building work and to the Co-op community fund and the Cambridge branch of John Lewis and partners for funding this project, which will help more people to be able to access the windmill safely and comfortably. When we told them that the path was being built, Christine Shaw said “at John Lewis & Partners, we appreciate the local area we work in and enjoy being able to give back to the local community, as it’s a way of saying thank you for your support and our Partners in the Cambridge shop will also have the added benefit of being able to visit this amazing local museum”. Steve Smith, who is a great supporter of the museum above and beyond the community fund, said “I’d just like to say what a pleasure it’s been to work with and support the museum through being one of our local causes and also by collaborating on community events. We are so pleased that funds raised have gone to support works on the grounds and hope this benefits so many in the community for years to come. Also we look forward to post covid times and planning future events with them”.

We’re also planning a new shed on site so that we can get things better organised. We're more than usually grateful to our regular mill and site maintenance volunteers for keeping things in a state where we are able to safely leave things alone for a little while. However, the winter is usually our time for tackling big tasks on site, so we haven't completely stopped. We're hoping that February and March will see two major projects:

1. An improved path to get onto site from Mill Close, and better access to the mill itself - this should help visitors who find the slope onto the museum site and the steep slope into the mill a challenge. We're very grateful to the Co-op and to John Lewis for providing the money for this and we're really excited to be getting close to getting it ready for whenever we're able to welcome visitors again.

2. A new shed so that we can start decluttering our workshop and making sure that everyone has the space they need to work and store everything on site. Admittedly this is probably more exciting for our volunteers than for the general public, but it will help to keep the site running and allow us to continue looking after our buildings and collections for everyone to enjoy!

After that we've still got our fingers crossed that we will be able to open to at least some extent as planned on Easter Sunday (4th April), but we haven't planned any of our usual events because things are just too uncertain. We'll keep everyone informed of any last-minute plans through the blog, newsletter, website and social media, so please keep an eye out for news - we're very grateful for your support!

Burwell Museumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03760034796105734892noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5963841707937479710.post-57265127067155646232020-12-22T13:03:00.001+00:002020-12-22T13:03:45.322+00:00Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from everyone at Burwell Museum and Windmill.

We are intending to open at Easter as usual, subject to any Covid-19 regulations that may be in place at the time.

All donations, no matter how small, are a huge help and gratefully received. that 2020 was going to be a memorable year at Burwell Museum and Windmill, but
we weren’t expecting it to be quite like this! Plans for celebrating the 200th
anniversary of our tower windmill had to be shelved in May, but we were very
lucky to have perfect weather on Sunday 20th September so that we
could celebrate in a safely socially distanced way with folk music, beer from
Burwell brewery and lots of lovely support from our friends in the village and
further afield. We were particularly pleased to have members of the Carter
family, descendants of the man who built and first owned the windmill, with us
on the day.

Particular
thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers, both those who were able to be there
on the day and those who are supporting us with maintenance work or from home,
and to:

Burwell
brewery for creating a special (and very tasty) beer for us so that we could
raise funds

Pat Kilbey
and everyone involved in the Burwell Folk Collective both for amazing music on
the day and for creating and recording two special songs for the windmill
anniversary

Year 1 at
Burwell Village College for the lovely birthday cards

Everyone
who came to visit on the day, complied cheerfully with all of the safety rules
and made it such a great day!

We’re not
sure what will happen with the museum going forward – we hope to continue
opening on Sundays from 11 until 3 until the end of October, which is always
the end of our open season. Then it’s fingers crossed for next Easter…

Keep an eye
on our website and social media for
more information when we have it.

Again we will be subject to changes at short notice so please keep an eye on our website and social media, but we are hoping to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Stevens' Mill with:

Live music from local musicians

Birthday cards to make for the mill

A special beer brewed by Burwell Brewery

Parts of the museum open (alas, still not the mill itself as social distancing is very difficult in such a small space).

If all goes to plan we will be able to celebrate on site, but we will also make sure that parts of the event are available online so that you can enjoy it at home if your circumstances make it difficult for you to visit in person. We're very grateful to all of our supporters, both those who are able to come out to us and those who still can't but wish us well!

The museum will close for the winter on Sunday 25 October, but volunteers will continue to work on mill and site maintenance - more volunteers always welcome! We hope to reopen as usual at Easter 2021 but we will need to work that out nearer the time.

Burwell Museumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03760034796105734892noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5963841707937479710.post-44977851452579621902020-07-30T13:14:00.002+01:002020-07-30T13:14:34.367+01:00Getting back to Burwell Museum - reopening 6th August Like everyone, we've been watching the development of government advice and trying to work out what we can do and when. We've decided that we can open some bits of the museum to the public again from Thursday the 6th of August, but because we can't offer a full service we will operate on a donation only basis. We don't want to put any pressure on anyone to visit before they're ready to come out, but we want to provide a service to those who want to use it through the school summer holidays. We're very grateful to everyone who is following us and wishing us well, and we hope to see you when you feel it's right for you! For now, here are our guidelines for opening from next week:

<p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; Most of the volunteers who keep us going are in the more "vulnerable" groups, as are a large proportion of our visitors, so we won't be reopening until it's very clear that it's safe to do so. Events in April and May have already been cancelled and it's likely that June will follow unless things change dramatically in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks to a grant from East Cambridgeshire District Council and a legacy last year from Mr Michael Mitcham, we're very lucky to be in a good position financially. We're very grateful to both the council and to Mr. Mitcham and his family for that, as it means we can continue to pay our staff during lockdown and spend the time making sure that our paperwork is all up to date (we'll spare you all the details, but it will be good to have it done!). Many small museums are struggling, though, so if you want to support local museums and industrial heritage then our friends at Prickwillow Museum, Ramsey Rural Museum and the Cambridge museum of Technology are among many appealing for help at the moment.

Our ongoing projects will continue as soon as we can - we're still waiting for planning permission for the path to the windmill, so we'll need to wait until the council has finished dealing with the crisis, and once our volunteers are able to safely come back to work we will continue with site maintenance and refreshing displays. If you are going past the windmill you may notice that it's looking a bit bedraggled- we've removed most of the shutters to make sure it's safe while we're not working on it. Our next project will be to paint each shutter and put them back again, so although this isn't the kind of year we'd planned for the 200th anniversary year of the windmill we will get it looking smart again as soon as we can!

We wish all of our volunteers, visitors and supporters well and hope to welcome you back when we can do so safely.
Burwell Museumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03760034796105734892noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5963841707937479710.post-84569950704138264342019-10-31T14:40:00.002+00:002019-10-31T14:40:18.484+00:00Thank you for an amazing season in 2019!
The last of our children's holiday activities went well today, with lots of people planting cress seeds to learn about our farming heritage. We've had a great summer all round (helped by some wonderful weather) and it's been great to welcome so many people to our children's activities. We've also welcomed groups from two WIs, Felix Coaches, a car club and the Mother's Union. Now we're looking forward to Heritage Open Days, which for us will be on the 15th, 19th and 22nd of September. On the 15th and 19th we're offering free entry to the museum, then on the 22nd we have our folk celebration with local musicians and dancers. We'll be looking at "People Power" through our collections, including a special guest appearance by the winning soapbox from the Newmarket Soapbox Derby.
We'll be spending the summer holidays finding out about different materials on Thursday afternoons; we made some amazing trophies for all sorts of achievements last week and I've spent some of this morning sawing up clothes pegs to make rag rugging tools for this week's work on cloth. If you're a little bit old for that sort of thing (although there's no age limit, everyone is welcome!) then we still have our temporary exhibition about Burwell's industrial history and all of our usual exhibition spaces (see map below) and the fine weather is a great time to come and explore our indoor and outdoor spaces.
We'll celebrate the start of the summer holidays with our summer fete on the 21st of July, with a packed line up of local musicians, and then explore what history is made of with children's activities every Thursday afternoon from 1.30 to 4.30. Come and hear stories, take part in craft activities and explore the museum's collections to find out about different materials, starting with metal on the 25th of July.
We had a great end to last month with the first of our "history is made of..." school holiday activities, with lots of families joining us to find out about bones, plastic and carbolic soap! The activities will continue every Thursday in the summer holidays so that visitors can explore the whole of the museum collection by looking at what it's made of.
June is the peak of the museum season, although as I write the rain seems to be putting people off a bit. We're really hoping for good weather next week, when we have three different WI group visits , our usual U3A French conversation class on Thursday and then Classic Car day on Sunday. Then we'll round off the month with a visit from Mepal and Witcham, one of our favourite schools. We've welcomed several new volunteers this year but we could still do with more; let us know if you'd like to get involved!
Now we're straight into preparations for National Mills Weekend on the 11th and 12th of May, which should be a brilliant opportunity to showcase the mill with free entry, musical entertainment and the usual stalls and tea room. Last year we had a very special event and attracted 628 people, and next year will be the 200th anniversary of the mill, so we've got a lot to celebrate over the weekend. Hope to see you there!
